PitchBook Research Workflows

PitchBook is most valuable used systematically rather than one search at a time. The difference between a firm that gets value from it and one that does not is usually whether anybody has turned searching into a repeatable workflow with defined outputs.

What this is used for

Private capital markets data: company records, transactions, investors, funds and the people attached to them. Used for building and maintaining a target universe, understanding ownership and capital history, and preparing the factual material behind a conversation.

The operational work inside it

  • Building a target universe against defined criteria, then maintaining it rather than rebuilding it
  • Extracting company, transaction and investor data to a defined field specification
  • Monitoring saved searches and alerts, and routing what fires to the right record
  • Cross-checking against other sources where they disagree, and recording which was used
  • Producing profiles, market maps and factual deal sheets from the underlying data
  • Feeding verified data back into the firm's own CRM rather than leaving it stranded

What good looks like

The universe is defined once and maintained continuously, so it is current when somebody needs it. Outputs look the same whoever produced them. Anything taken from PitchBook into the CRM carries its source and date, so a reader knows what they are relying on.

Common problems

One search at a time. Each researcher starts fresh, the same work gets done repeatedly, and nobody accumulates anything.

Data extracted and stranded. Figures pulled into a document and never fed back to the record, so the next person starts again.

Alerts nobody actions. Monitoring set up once, then ignored, which is worse than no monitoring because it creates false confidence.

Sources not recorded. When two sources disagree and nobody noted which was used, the discrepancy surfaces in a meeting.

Stale universes. Built for a project and never maintained, so the next project starts from scratch.

How we work in it

We work under your firm's own licence and its terms, to your specification and your taxonomy, with formal QC on the output. We do not redistribute licensed data, and research is prepared factually against your brief for your team to assess and use.
