What Is Finance Operations Support?
Finance operations support is the provision of named people to run the transactional and recurring work of a finance function: accounts payable, expenses, reconciliations, sales invoicing, credit control and month end support. The work happens inside the client's own systems, and the ledger, the controls and every approval stay with the client.
What it covers
Finance operations is the processing layer of a finance function. It is the work that has to happen every week regardless of what else is going on, and it is usually the first thing to get squeezed when the team is busy with something more valuable.
- Accounts payable. Invoice receipt, capture, coding, allocation and multi entity treatment, prepared for your approval
- Expenses. Expense report processing, coding and receipt management
- Reconciliations. Invoice, statement, expenses, billing, bank and ledger
- Sales invoicing and collections. Raising invoices, credit control and chasing
- Time and billing administration. Time capture chasing, work in progress and disbursement administration
- Month end. Close support, accruals preparation and the reporting that comes off it
Most of this work is high volume, rule based and unforgiving of inconsistency, which is what makes it suitable for a documented process run by a trained team rather than absorbed by whoever has capacity.
What it does not cover
The distinction that matters here is between processing and judgement.
We do not make accounting judgements. How something should be treated, whether a provision is appropriate, what a policy should be: those decisions belong to your qualified people. We work to the treatment you have set and escalate anything that does not fit it.
We do not approve or release payment. Every payment run is prepared for your approval. Nobody at Clandon authorises a payment, and nobody changes supplier bank details on their own authority.
We do not produce statutory accounts, sign anything off, or provide tax advice. Finance operations support sits underneath the controller and the finance lead, not alongside them.
We are not your auditor and we do not replace internal controls. Where a control exists, we work within it. Where one is missing, we will say so, but designing it is your call.
Who normally owns it
The finance lead, controller or finance director. They keep the ledger, the chart of accounts, the approval thresholds, the supplier relationships and every judgement about treatment.
What changes is who does the processing. A finance manager who was spending half a week coding invoices gets that time back, and the coding still happens to the same rules, because the rules are documented rather than remembered.
How Clandon supports it
We staff the processing work, either as a capabilities team across several finance workflows or as role based support in one, and manage the team and the quality checking. Most finance engagements start with accounts payable and widen from there.
